Redesign UX/UI

Brief

Apple Music with more personalized features in a whole new way
Lately, Apple Music has become less of a priority for Apple.
Many users have been asking for a more convenient Apple Music, and I was able to create an easy way to roll out a personalized journey for them.

Problems

Currently, users feel that Apple Music's usability is very outdated and less efficient compared to other competitors.
The main pain points of using Apple Music are:

  • Many Core Features are hidden away in Now Playing Page
  • Outdated and Unsatisfied with the current Library page
  • Want a more practical way to use the "Share" feature

Goals

These problems lead to my overarching goal:

To transform a typical music app into more customized and convenient music player without deviating from the familiarity of existing Apple Music

Research

I began by interviewing six users: 3 users who have been using Apple Music for at least one year and 3 other users who have been using Spotify/Youtube Music for at least one year. I asked and garnered 3 common findings from the responses. Here is what I found:

  • 1. Users want the landing page to be more personalized rather than being general
  • 2. Users prefer to have core features in the lock screen of the player to allow more easier navigation
  • 3. Users believe that add, shuffle, replay, and share features are pivotal to the app

Key Insights

Thinking Process

I grouped and narrowed down all the responses from the interviewers into two main issues.
The main issues can be found in playlist on the main page and playing experience in the music player.

Issue on main Library page vs. Issue on playing experience

Playlist issue on main page vs. issue on playing experience

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed the top 3 music apps that are currently used by many other users.

User Persona

I identified two main user personas:

Proposed Solutions

1.Personalized Home Even More

Say goodbye to your messy main home page!
After noticing that users want to use Library page more personalized, I combined Listening Now and Library Page into one. Now, users can go to edit home and easily manage their own main page. In this way, users can take out things that they don't want to see in the main home.

In the Edit Home, Users can choose Recently Added, Stations for you, Trending, and etc in the main home.

Too much misused spaces in current "Library" page

After

Easily manage your own main home using "Edit Home"

2.Playing with fewer touches

Tab replay, shuffle, and add more quickly than before!
Diving deeper and focusing on main key change in the interface is the addition of the core features in the music player. As many core features are hidden away under "Select More" tab in current interface, I relocated the core features outside of the "Select More" tab.

Currently, some of the pivotal features were hidden away in the music player.

Issues with finding core features that users constantly use

Issues with approaching core features from the lock screen

After

After multiple iterations, I laid out music player with easily access features: tab replay, shuffle, and share.
I've introduced this change in both main and lock screen music player:

Main Music Player

Users can even share and add songs with fewer touches

Lock Screen Player

Users can also access core features without unlock their phone

3. Stay Connected Anytime

Follow your favorite artists and friends now + Stay connected whenever you go!
By sharing music to close friends through the Apple Music, it automatically increases user connectivity more faster than before. I took current concept to the next level by advancing it into social media business model. Users can now share their music to the followers within fewer touches.

If Diana share her current music to David, David will automatically receive a notification through his Apple Music as below.

Use Case

The two different user groups: New Subscribe/Returners have two different steps to go through as below:

Results

The detailed analysis of the current design improved overall usability in many ways. User testing shows 90% of the users found it very useful. The next step for this redesign could be adding night mode.
